SATURDAY FEBRUARY 13: Food Drive in Benzonia and Honor
The next Blue Tger event is a food drive, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the following locations: Shop and Save in Benzonia, Honor Family Market in Honor, Glen's Market in Frankfort, and The Dollar Store in Benzonia. Please call Joyce Skinner at 275-2553 to volunteer for a two-hour shift (The Dollar Store is covered). Thanks to the merchants for their cooperation!
Santa Party in Thompsonville was fun for kids, parents, and volunteers!
The Blue Tigers helped for the second year on the "Community Christmas Party"held at the Thompsonville Village Hall in December. The Benzie Dems provided funds to help pay for the photo copying so the kids can have their picture taken with Santa. The Blue Tigers filled Christmas bags with fruit and candy for the kids. Thanks to Mike Ross and his volunteers who lent a hand to the event sponsors, the Benzie Human Services Collaborative Committee.
Blue Tiger Dems focus on local action
In the spirit of President Obama’s call to serve, our local party’s Blue Tiger Committee continues to work on organizing community service projects. In June, Benzie Blue Tigers helped out with the Thompsonville Summerfest and since last winter have conducted two food drives to help alleviate hunger in Benzie County.
At their October meeting, the Blue Tiger Committee decided that the Garden Theater fund raiser they are planning will be held next May. The event will include a screening of a politically progressive film at the Frankfort theater. Proceeds will be donated to the local Youth Corp program, which has the mission of helping young people develop skills leading to self-reliance.
Since there is no lack of worthy community organizations, the decision on which group to support with this event wasn’t easy. Doing their homework, committee members spoke to human service leaders in our county during the decision process.
The Benzie Dem Blue Tigers are committed to having fun while serving and to the idea that the two are not mutually exclusive. We invite our activist neighbors to join us as we plan community building projects and have fun in the process.
The next Blue Tigers meeting is Wednesday, November 4, 6:30 p.m. at the Cabbage Shed in Elberta. For more information, contact Diane Wilbur by phone (378-4362) or email (dwilbur46@gmail.com).
