- Keep the letter brief: Letters should never be longer than one page
- Limit your letter to one issue, such as remedies to the Supreme Court's Citizens United v. FEC ruling. Legislative aides read many letters on many issues in a day, so make yours should as concise as possible.
- Let them know who you are and what you want up front: In the first paragraph, tell your legislators who you represent (if writing on behalf of a local group) and identify the issue you are concerned about.
- Be straightforward: ask the recipient whether he or she will support specific legislation or regulation.
- Stick to the three most important points: Choose the three strongest points that will be most persuasive.
- To make your arguments most compelling, do a little research to find out what they care about.
- Personalize your letter: Tell the recipient why the issue is of concern for his or her community.
- Personalize your relationship: If you’ve voted for the person, supported their campaign with time or money, or have a personal or business relationship, then say so.
- Show that you’re the expert: It’s your job to educate them. It’s their job to represent you.

Representatives are elected in even-numbered years to 2-year terms, and take office on the first day of January following the election. Each Representative is limited to serving three terms.

Our state senators serve four-year terms concurrent with the governor's term of office. Terms begin on January 1. Senators who have not served more than half of someone else's senate term are eligible for two full terms, i.e. eight years. Although Michigan senators serve four-year terms, the elections are not staggered; instead of half of the seats up for election every two years, all 40 seats are up for election on a 2010, 2014, 2018...schedule.
