This Saturday, September 6: March on Baldwin Detention Center

This Saturday, Sept. 6., some of us are going to carpool down to Baldwin to support a protest in front of the Baldwin Detention Center. The event is headed by the No Detention Centers in Michigan group, which has led protests there before.

If you want to join us, please be at our office no later than 11:30 a.m. It takes about an hour to get to Baldwin, and we need to find parking spaces. The event is slated from 1-4 p.m., although we don’t expect to stay more than an hour or so – it will be up to your driver.

Please dress for comfort and the weather and bring water. Those with mobility issues may want to reconsider, as we are unsure how close you can park to the event. We have no idea how many people may show up or if there will be counterprotests or other actions, although we have no reason to think there will be any problems at this time. We also suggest we use the buddy system to ensure someone knows where you are.

For those unfamiliar with Baldwin – it is a former poorly run youth detention center that has been taken over by a private firm. We understand that the conditions are terrible for those illegally imprisoned there, including being sent to other countries before they have a chance to arrange for legal counsel.

If you plan to come, if you need a ride and if you are able to drive, please let us know at (benziedemocrats@gmail.com) or call Susan at ‭(231) 510-5861 by Saturday at 8 a.m. Please bring others who might be interested!
